Invader invades Morocco

French artist Invader recently visited the capital of Morocco to leave his signature mosaics around the streets of Rabat.

One month after my quick invasion of Marrakech, I went back to Morocco to invade its capitale city, Rabat !
Rabat is a wonderfull city, a perfect spot for the 20 mosaics I have disseminated in the narrow streets of the medina, full of riads, stray cats and zellige tiles but also in the new part of the city.” – Invader

Who Is Invader ?

Invader is the pseudonym of a well-known French urban artist, he took his name from the 1978 arcade game called Space Invaders. Invader’s work is modelled on the crude pixellation of 8-bit video games, his characters are created from square ceramic tiles. If you have seen the amazing street art documentary Exit Through The Gift Shop by Banksy, you have seen Invader during his work.

What is the Space Invaders project about?

“It is first of all about liberating Art from its usual alienators that museums or institutions can be. But it is also about freeing the Space Invaders from their video games TV screens and to bring them in our physical world. Everything started the day I decided to give a material appearance to pixelization through ceramic tiles. I first wanted to create a series of “canvases” but I soon realised that tiles were the perfect material to display these pieces directly on the walls. I then had the idea of deploying my creatures on the walls of Paris and soon after in cities around the globe. Each of these unique pieces become the fragment of a monumental installation.”
