Fintan Magee in Norway

Melbourne-based artist Fintan Magee just finished this 32 meter high mural in Stavanger, Norway. The piece was created as part of this year’s Nuart Festival.

“The mural depicts the portrait of what appears to be an oil worker. Stavanger is known for its rich oil driven economy, that in recent years has started to weaken.
On one hand we have the figure on the left, a meticulously depicted portrait painted against a background showing a modern and prosperous city.
The figure on the right on the other hand seems to vanish and become part of the background, and so does the landscape behind him. The pavement at their feet has been destroyed. There is no longer a stable ground to stand on.”

Fintan Magee In Ukraine

A couple of days ago Australian street artist Fintan Magee created his fourth mural in Kyiv, Ukraine.

As a part of the Mural Social Club Festival that is taking place in Ukraine a world-known Australian street artist Fintan Magee decorated a 17-floor high building in Kyiv with the large-scale painting of a girl. The title of the artwork is ‘The visionary’.
The project was supported by International Charity Foundation called “Ukraine! I am for you!”.

“For me street art and muralism have an important social purpose, and that is to bridge a gap between the general public and the gallery. If the art institutions become too focused on creating art for an educated elite they will become disconnected from the general public. That’s why I was so excited to work in Troeshyna, the neighborhood that is geographically disconnected from the center of Kyiv so it’s important that we also work here, this way we can integrate art into people’s everyday lives”, says Fintan.

Woman With Aloe Vera Plant

Recent mural by Fintan Magee in Sapri, Salerno, Italy titled “Woman With Aloe Vera Plant”.
His mural is based on Grant Woods painting ‘Woman with Plants’.
“This painting depicts a local woman in the small town of Sapri in South of Italy. The mural references the social realist tradition of painting regular people within their working environment and celebrates the role of motherhood in South Italian communities. The Aloe Vera plant can be seen growing in many gardens and balconies in the local area and is also important to the artist personally because during his childhood, his own mother grew the plant, often using it to help heal his cuts or bruises if he was injured.”

The Water Carriers

Fintan Magee, the Melbourne-based artist, created a new mural titled “The Water Carriers” in Sydney, Australia. He used acrylic paint and two mirrors to create it, his inspiration was an image of Syrian refugee children that he took from a discarded newspaper clipping.

“The work shows seven Syrian refugee children, at first they appear as regular children but as you step deeper into the space the mirrors we installed distort the image and you discover that the line of children stretches infinitely. The children wait to fill empty water vessels which is a symbol for the healing component. The work comments on the scale of the current refugee crisis and echo’s a cynical view on how history repeats itself. ”
